Robert Charles (Tug) Wilson
Robert (Bob, Tug) was born in Brisbane and was raised in Kingaroy. After leaving
school he worked on his Grandfather’s farm before joining the RAN in July 1962 and
served on surface ships, HMAS Anzac, Stuart, Kimbla and HMAS Harman before
going to the UK in 1966 for submarine training. Bob remained in submarines, serving
at various times, on HMASSM Oxley, Otway, Ovens and Onslow until 1971 when he
left the Navy as an Acting Petty Officer.

After leaving the Navy Bob worked for various cash register companies before
eventually starting his own business which involved the retrieval and maintenance of
shopping trolleys for major supermarkets throughout Qld and NSW. He remained in
this business until retiring in 2004.

His involvement in the community was serving on the committee of the Submarines
Association Qld Branch for a period of 16 years for which he was awarded Life
Membership only days before he passed away. He was on the Committee for Sub-
con06 in Brisbane and was responsible for producing some of the table decorations
and taking of photographs. He also from 1993 until 2004 was involved with the
Beenleigh RSL Sub-branch and Services Club serving on the Committee as
Treasurer and Secretary. The major contribution Bob made to the community was in
his last months he organised a charity walk “Bob (Tug) Wilson’s Walk for Kids with
Cancer” from Coolongatta to Canberra in May-June 2008 to co-inside with Subcon08.
He passed away 3 weeks before the event but his family and the submarine
community went ahead with the walk and raised $74128.39 which was donated to the
Royal Brisbane Children’s Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead,
Sydney. This event, “Bob (Tug) Wilson’s Walk for Kids with Cancer” has been
recognised by The Children’s Hospital at Westmead by being included on The Major
Donors 2008 Honour Board situated near the Cancer Clinic at the hospital.

He and Carol met in Sydney  in 1962 just four months after Bob joined the navy and
were married in 1966 at St George the Martyr Chapel at HMAS Watson and were
married for 42 years. He is survived by Carol, Kim & David and their children,
Christopher, Mikayla, Samuel and Lucas, Stuart & Dianne and their children, Isabella,
Grace and Eloise.
